Helping Build Capacity

Community-based and non-profit organizations do extraordinary work, often with limited resources. We believe that investing in the strength and capacity of grantee organizations is as important as the grants themselves. 

Currently, over 150 grantees have access to our capacity-building offerings. Our team works with eligible grantees to ensure the right information is shared about each program. Grantees are always welcome to connect with us to express interest, share needs, or explore other ways we can support their work. 

Advancing Equity Pilot Program

Launched in 2025, this program provides financial support for grantees to advance equity within their organizations. We recognize that this kind of work requires long-term cultural change – and that it is often under-resourced. 

Funding can support work related to anti-racism and anti-oppression, decolonization and reconciliation, trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion and belonging, and accessibility. Eligible grantees may apply for up to $20,000 per year. Funding is available to all eligible grantees and is not subject to a competitive application process. 

Please note that this pilot program is not intended to support ongoing operational needs such as new employee salaries. 

Lois Shelton Education and Training Program

This program is named in honour of Lois Shelton, a long-time Law Foundation employee who dedicated years to stewarding education and training experiences for grantees. Her legacy lives on in the opportunities this program makes possible. 

The Lois Shelton program offers three types of support, intended for professional development and coaching for organizational leaders, organizational development and governance training, and professional development for legal advocates and eligible staff. Financial support is provided by way of reimbursement, with different maximum amounts for each type. 

Human Resources Support Program

The Human Resources Support Program is designed to support the health and sustainability of grantee organizations. Through this program, eligible grantees may access up to five hours of free employment legal services, delivered with confidentiality in mind so that organizations can seek support directly without going through Foundation staff. 

Services may include human resources and labour relations legal advice, support with responding to workplace complaints, and assistance in developing or updating workplace policies and key documents such as employment contracts.
