Working Remotely: Some Tech Options

As advocates and lawyers funded by the Law Foundation shift to providing remote services, we are hearing of a few issues — for instance, how to virtually meet with clients, keeping your personal cell number private while using it to do your job remotely, and signing documents

Many people are using Zoom meetings to talk with clients and fellow advocates or resource people. You do not have to sign up to use the service and it is free for basic services. You can use it on your computer or phone, and you can use either audio or video.  https://zoom.us/

If you are using your personal phone to talk with clients, it is best if you do not give out your number. There are a few ways to deal with this:  
  • Block your number
      • Alternatively, you can dial #31# before dialing out each time.
        Example: #31#6046602841
     
  • Using Line2 Set up a second line (with a separate number) on your phone to use for business calls. https://www.line2.com/   If you and your organization decide to use an option such as this, you can contact your program director to ask for temporary funding to support this while you have to work remotely.
  • Smart Voice from Shaw Some organizations use the Shaw service ‘smart voice” but this is a more systemic solution

The app that we have heard is the cheapest ($70 per year) is Authentisign https://www.instanetsolutions.com/products/authentisign/ 

If the offices you deal with are currently allowing verbal approvals and do not need a signature, you may not need this right now, but we thought it good to know about.
