The Law Foundation of BC has an opening for one law student for a full-time position for the period of May to August 2018. The position is at the Law Foundation’s offices located in downtown Vancouver and is only open to law students who will be continuing their JD studies in the fall of 2018.
The Law Foundation is a grantmaking organization that receives and distributes the interest on funds held in lawyers’ pooled trust accounts maintained in financial institutions. We fund projects and programs throughout BC that benefit the public in the following areas: legal education, legal research, legal aid, law reform, and law libraries. The Law Foundation funds over 80 legal aid and law-related organizations in the province, all of which promote access to justice for the people of BC. As well, approximately 30 projects are funded each year towards the same purpose.
To advance and promote a just society governed by the rule of law, through leadership, innovation, and collaboration.
A society where access to justice is protected and advanced.
The Law Foundation is administered by a Board of Governors who are responsible for governing the Law Foundation and making all decisions concerning grants. The Board has eighteen volunteer members, fifteen of whom are members of the Law Society or the judiciary and who represent the geographical areas of the province, and three of whom are not lawyers. The Board of the Law Foundation is supported by a staff of ten, five of whom are lawyers.
The summer student position is under the supervision of the executive director and entails supporting Law Foundation staff in doing research, assisting with evaluation of legal aid and other law related programs, and generally assisting in the running of the Law Foundation. The focus of the position is primarily on research and policy matters, though the particulars vary from year to year.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to Sandra Morgenstern at email@example.com by 5 pm on March 23, 2018.
